If your Google Ads get clicks but no conversions or leads, the cause is usually one of ten things: conversion tracking is broken or counts the wrong action, your ads show for the wrong searches, the landing page does not match the search or is slow on mobile, the keywords are too broad, your location or language settings are off, the offer is weak, calls and WhatsApp are not tracked, the budget is spread too thin, the bidding strategy has too little data, or leads arrive but are not followed up. Check them in the order below, starting with tracking.
Key Takeaways
- Check tracking first. If conversions are not counted correctly, every other number in the account misleads you.
- Read your search terms report. It shows what people actually typed before clicking.
- A landing page that does not match the search wastes the click, however good the ad is.
- Many Indian leads come by call or WhatsApp. If those are not tracked, good campaigns look like failures.
- Fix one thing at a time and give each change enough days to show results.
You are paying for clicks, your dashboard shows visitors, and your phone is quiet. It is one of the most frustrating places for a business owner to be, and also one of the most common. The good news is that "clicks but no leads" is almost always fixable. It usually comes from a short list of causes that you can check one by one.
This guide lists 10 of them in the order we normally check, with where to look in your account and what to do. You do not need to be an expert to follow it, but if you reach a step you are not comfortable with, we have said when to ask for help. If you would rather have an expert look, our Google Ads agency in Ahmedabad team offers a free Google Ads audit.
Google Ads not working? First check that there really are no conversions
Before you change anything, make sure the problem is real. Ask your team: did anyone get calls, WhatsApp messages or form enquiries that nobody linked to the ads? Ask new customers how they found you. If leads arrive but are not counted, the campaign may be fine, and the problem is tracking (fix 1). An account that shows clicks but no conversions is sometimes just not recording them.
Google Ads clicks but no conversions: quick diagnosis
| What you see | Likely cause | Start with fix |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks, but the conversions column shows zero | Tracking is missing or broken | 1 |
| Many clicks, but search terms look unrelated | Wrong keywords or no negatives | 2 and 3 |
| People visit but leave in seconds | Page does not match the search or loads slowly | 4 and 5 |
| Clicks from far-away places or odd languages | Location or language settings | 6 |
| Form fills are low but phone calls exist | Calls and WhatsApp not tracked | 1 and 8 |
| Leads arrive but nobody becomes a customer | Follow-up or lead quality | 10 |
The 10 fixes
1. Check your conversion tracking
Where to look: In Google Ads, open Goals, then Conversions, and look at the status of each conversion action. "Recording conversions" is good. "No recent conversions" or "Inactive" needs attention. Tools such as Google Tag Assistant can test whether your tag fires.
What goes wrong: The tag was never installed on the thank-you page, was removed during a website update, counts page views instead of real enquiries, or counts the same lead twice.
What to do: Make sure each business goal has one primary conversion, such as a form submission, a click on your phone number or a WhatsApp button. Test it by submitting your own form and checking it appears. Until this is right, nothing else in the account can be trusted.
2. Read your search terms report
Where to look: Insights and reports, then Search terms. This shows the real words people typed before clicking your ad.
What goes wrong: Your ad shows for jobs ("dentist jobs in Ahmedabad"), free information ("what is root canal"), competitors, students or places you do not serve. You pay for each of these clicks and none will become a customer.
What to do: Add the clearly wrong terms as negative keywords, which tell Google not to show your ad for them. Do this every week for the first month, then monthly. Our 7 Google Ads mistakes post explains why skipping this step is so costly.
While you are there, check the network settings too. Search partners and the Display network can bring clicks from sites and apps where people are less likely to enquire. Look at conversions by network, and switch off what is not producing leads.
3. Tighten your keywords and match types
Where to look: Keywords tab, and the "match type" of each keyword.
What goes wrong: Broad match keywords with a small budget can show your ad for loosely related searches. A keyword such as "marketing" or "interior" brings many curious clicks and few buyers.
What to do: Focus on specific, high-intent phrases that include the service and the place, such as "interior designer for 3 BHK in Bopal". Use phrase and exact match for your core terms and test broader ones only when conversions are steady and your negatives list is strong.
4. Match the landing page to the search
Where to look: Click your own ad and read the page as a stranger would.
What goes wrong: Someone searches "knee replacement surgeon in Ahmedabad" and lands on your home page with ten services. They have to hunt for what they want, and most leave.
What to do: Send each ad group to a page that matches its search. The headline should echo the search, the main benefit and one clear action (call, WhatsApp or form) should be visible without scrolling, and trust signals such as reviews, certificates and an address should be near the top. We cover this in our Google Ads strategy checklist.
5. Fix mobile speed and usability
Where to look: Run your landing page through Google's PageSpeed Insights, and open it on your own phone on mobile data.
What goes wrong: Most searches in Ahmedabad happen on phones. A page that takes several seconds to load, has tiny buttons or a form that is hard to complete loses people before they read anything.
What to do: Compress images, remove heavy sliders and pop-ups, make the call button easy to tap and shorten the form to the essentials such as name, phone and need.
6. Check location, language and device settings
Where to look: Campaign settings, then Locations and Languages. Also check the Locations report for where clicks come from.
What goes wrong: The location option is set to "presence or interest", so people who only show interest in Ahmedabad from elsewhere see your ads. Or the campaign targets all of India when you serve only the city. Language settings may not match how your customers search.
What to do: Target the areas you really serve and choose the option for people actually in or regularly in those places. Test English, Hindi and Gujarati keywords and ads separately instead of assuming one language fits all.
7. Look at your offer and ad message
Where to look: Read your ad and your page side by side. Would you contact you?
What goes wrong: The offer is vague ("best quality, best price"), nothing makes the visitor act now, or the price expectation does not match. People who expect a low price click, see a higher one and leave.
What to do: Say what you do, for whom, where, and what happens next: "Free 15-minute consultation. Call or WhatsApp today." If price is a big factor, state a starting range or how pricing works, so the clicks you pay for come from people who can afford you. Avoid claims you cannot prove.
8. Track calls and WhatsApp, not just forms
Where to look: Your conversion actions list, and your phone log.
What goes wrong: In India, many customers call or WhatsApp rather than fill in a form. If only form fills count, the account sees only a small part of your real leads, and smart bidding learns from incomplete data.
What to do: Add call extensions or assets, track clicks on the phone number and WhatsApp button on your page, and consider call tracking so you can see which ads and keywords bring phone calls. Make sure the same enquiry is not counted twice.
9. Check budget, bidding strategy and campaign structure
Where to look: Campaign settings for budget and bid strategy, and the "limited by budget" and learning status labels.
What goes wrong: A small budget is spread across many campaigns, so none gets enough data. Or an automated bid strategy that needs conversions to learn is switched on before there are any. Campaigns compete against each other for the same searches. If your budget is so small that you get only a handful of clicks a day, Google also has too little data to learn from, and results stay unstable.
What to do: Concentrate the budget on your best one or two campaigns. If you have very few conversions, start with a simpler bidding approach and move to automated strategies once you have steady data. Group keywords by intent, not all in one ad group. Our guide to new Google Ads strategies and tactics that stopped working explain how automation changes what you control.
10. Look at what happens after the lead arrives
Where to look: Your own lead sheet, call log or CRM.
What goes wrong: Leads come in at night or on Sunday and nobody answers until days later. The person has already called someone else. Or the leads are real but of the wrong type, such as small orders when you need large ones.
What to do: Reply within minutes if you can, and set up a simple script for qualifying questions. Note the source, date and outcome of every lead, and tell your ad team which kinds turn into customers. They can then steer the campaign towards those and away from the rest. This "closed loop" is where good accounts pull ahead.
Low quality leads and wasted spend: how to tell
Sometimes the account does produce enquiries, but they are the wrong ones. Low quality leads usually have one of these causes:
- Vague ads. If the ad does not say the price range, the place or who the service is for, everyone clicks, including people you cannot serve.
- Broad keywords. Loose terms bring students, job seekers and price shoppers.
- No filtering on the form. A form with only name and phone attracts anyone. One or two questions, such as budget range or the service needed, help your team call the right people first.
- Counting every form as a lead. If spam or test entries are counted, the account learns from bad data.
Wasted spend usually hides in the same few places: irrelevant search terms, search partners and Display clicks, wrong locations, ads running when nobody answers the phone, and disapproved or limited ads. Our 30-point audit checklist shows where to look for each.
What to measure instead of clicks
| Number | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Cost per lead | What each enquiry costs, which you can compare to what a customer is worth |
| Lead to customer rate | Shows lead quality, not just quantity |
| Cost per customer | The number that decides whether ads pay off |
| Search terms share that is relevant | Shows how much of your spend is wasted |
| Impression share lost to budget or rank | Shows whether you are missing good searches |

When to change things, and when to wait
Do not change everything at once. If you change keywords, the landing page and the budget on the same day, you will not know which change helped. Fix tracking first, then search terms, then the landing page, and give each change at least a week or two, depending on how many clicks you receive. Very small accounts may need longer, because a few clicks do not show a pattern.
When to ask for help
Ask a specialist when tracking is complex (several forms, call tracking and a CRM), when you spend a lot and cannot afford slow learning, or when you have tried the fixes above and nothing improves. If you are thinking of hiring, read how to choose a Google Ads agency in Ahmedabad first, so you know what to ask.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Google Ads get clicks but no leads?
Common causes are broken or wrong conversion tracking, ads showing for irrelevant searches, a landing page that does not match the search or loads slowly on mobile, wrong location settings, a weak offer, untracked calls and WhatsApp, and slow follow-up. Check tracking first.
How do I know if my conversion tracking works?
In Google Ads, open Goals and Conversions and check the status of each action. Then test it yourself by submitting your form or clicking your call button and confirming a conversion appears. Google Tag Assistant can also show whether your tag fires.
What is a search terms report?
It is a report in Google Ads that lists the real words people typed before they saw and clicked your ad. Reviewing it shows wasted spend and gives you negative keywords to add.
What are negative keywords?
Negative keywords are words you tell Google not to show your ad for, such as jobs, free, or the names of places you do not serve. They stop you paying for clicks that will never become customers.
How long should I wait before changing my Google Ads?
Fix tracking immediately. For other changes, wait long enough to collect a useful number of clicks, usually one to two weeks. Change one thing at a time so you can see what worked.
Can a bad landing page really cause no leads?
Yes. If the page loads slowly, does not match the search, or makes it hard to call or fill a form, visitors leave. The ad did its job, but the page lost the lead.
Should I stop my ads if I get no leads?
Not straight away. Pause or reduce the budget if you are spending heavily while tracking is broken, then fix the cause. If you still get no leads after fixing tracking, search terms and the landing page, review the offer and the market.
Are phone calls and WhatsApp counted as leads?
Only if you set them up. Add call and WhatsApp click conversions and make sure they are not counted twice. In India, many real leads arrive this way, so leaving them out makes good campaigns look poor.
Why is my Google Ads not working?
The usual causes are broken or missing conversion tracking, ads showing for irrelevant searches, a landing page that does not match the search or loads slowly on mobile, wrong location settings and a weak offer. Check tracking first, then search terms, then the page.
What is a good conversion rate for Google Ads?
There is no single good number, because it depends on your industry, offer and price. Compare your rate with your own earlier months, and focus on cost per lead and cost per customer, which show whether the ads pay for themselves.
How do I stop low quality leads from Google Ads?
Make ads and pages state the service, place and price range, use specific keywords, add negative keywords, ask one or two qualifying questions on the form, and tell your ad team which leads became customers so campaigns can move towards them.
